Intelligent Base Station Antenna System for 5.5G/6G Applications

With the continuous evolution of wireless network to 5.5G/6G, artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly important role in network architecture, protocols, and operations. AI and machine learning (ML) technologies are used to enhance network data analysis capabilities and performance. To enable the online automatic adjustment of network coverage and capacity with the integration of AI-based optimization methods, the digitalization of base station antennas becomes one of the key factors. In this talk, we will present some preliminary attempts in the antenna digitalization associated with some function products. Moreover, ML is applied to the multi-objective optimization and generative design in the digitalized antenna system. It’s believed that intelligent base station antenna system will pave the way for various AI-based applications in future wireless systems. Last but not least, several challenging topics about the design, architecture and scheduling of intelligent antenna system will be presented for discussion.

​Weihong XIAO received the Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, both in Electronic Engineering, in 2003 and 2006 respectively. Mr. Xiao has been with Huawei Technologies since 2006, where he is currently the CTO for Base Station Antenna. Under his leadership, Huawei Antenna has ranked No. 1 in competitiveness for the past nine consecutive years. Meanwhile, Huawei has developed a series of cutting-edge technologies of FreSIP, SDIF and Metalens for the comprehensive improvement of RF efficiency, coverage efficiency and beamforming efficiency, leading the base station antenna industry into a new era of continuously improving its generalized efficiency. For example, Huawei BladeAAU Pro packaged the iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, and Best Mobile Network Infrastructure Award. His research interests include the theory and design of antennas and arrays for base stations, and the integration of antenna, filter and algorithm for wireless communications. He holds over 140 granted and pending US/WO/PCT/CN patents.
