Scenario-Based Antenna Technologies for Coverage Performance Improvement


In today’s digital landscape, seamless connectivity is no longer a luxury but a necessity, yet many user scenarios suffer from poor mobile coverage. In this talk, two kinds of scenario-based antenna technologies are proposed for coverage performance improvement. Firstly, after considering the effects of the angle and polarization of incident waves penetrating the walls, a novel base station antenna with special polarization and radiation pattern is designed to greatly enhance the outdoor-to-indoor coverage of high-rise buildings. Secondly, a low-cost antenna deployment optimization method is presented for the coverage performance improvement in high-speed railway communications. The installation status of the base station antenna is optimized to realize the best projection of the antenna gain pattern on the line-type coverage area for the railway dedicated network. The field test results are provided to validate the superior coverage performance of the proposed scenario-based antenna technologies.





Weihong Xiao received the Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, both in Electronic Engineering, in 2003 and 2006 respectively. Mr. Xiao has been with Huawei Technologies since 2006, where he is currently the CTO for Base Station Antenna and Director of Antenna Technology C-TMG. Under his leadership, Huawei Antenna has ranked No. 1 in competitiveness for the past ten consecutive years. Meanwhile, Huawei has developed a series of cutting-edge technologies of FreSIP, SDIF and Metalens for the comprehensive improvement of RF efficiency, coverage efficiency and beamforming efficiency, leading the base station antenna industry into a new era of continuously improving its generalized efficiency. For example, Huawei BladeAAU Pro packaged the iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, and Best Mobile Network Infrastructure Award, while Huawei Green Antenna Series won GSMA GLOMO Award for Best Mobile Network Infrastructure 2024. He holds over 180 granted and pending US/WO/PCT/CN patents.
